Goffin in Cincy reaches first M1000 final

David Goffin is the closest thing currently on tour to Bjorn Borg in terms of size, speed and maximum court coverage.

Thanks to a walk-over in the quarters and a semi-final victory over Richard Gasquet, Goffin has reached his first final at the Masters level. But it’s not only because of withdrawals by Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem on the weaker side of the draw away from Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Goffin has returned very well, giving Gasquet only 3 points on his second serve. He says he likes conditions in Cincinnati, where he reached the semi-final last year only to retire from a night match with Federer.

His success in Ohio isn’t an aberration. The speediest guy on tour should be in the mix for many events to come.
