Roger will rock Wimbledon again
Never mind Roger Federer’s struggles in Germany. He’s still the favorite to win Wimbledon.
He was beaming after trouncing Dusan Lajovic in the opening match on the pristine green grass of center court, and not only because he won. He emerged wearing a new brand — Uniqlo — after signing a contract perhaps worth more than 100 million dollars, according to unconfirmed reports.
This new deal should give Federer the extra boost of juice he needs to win his 9th title. He’s also got a favorable draw. Borna Coric, his conqueror in Germany, lost his first round match on Court 12. To reach the finals, Federer’s most dangerous opponents could be the big serving Croats — Ivo Karlovic and Marin Cilic. Many observers are picking Cilic to win his second slam thanks to his victory in Queen’s and the honeymoon effect of his recent marriage. But Cilic has yet to prove he can beat Roger in a final, and he may still be haunted by his tearful misfortune in the final last year.
Court conditions might play a key role this year amid unusually hot summer temperatures. The grass is well-watered and high. If it stays that way, Roger can benefit from his incomparable slice backhand and wide serve. A decimated court full of dirt spots could benefit the King of Clay Rafa Nadal and possibly also Novak Djokovic.
But until proven otherwise, Roger remains the King of Grass.
