Wang Qiang finding confidence at Wimbledon

Wang Qiang, looking good in a white Stella McCartney and Adidas hoodie, is speaking in English with more confidence these days. 

She came into Wimbledon ranked 15 in the world, and she won two matches before losing a battle against Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-4. 

 

Wang, who often practices with male hitting partners, was taking aggressive return positions and hitting the ball hard, clean and flat from both sides. 

“I am hitting the ball very hard and playing aggressively in practice. My coach told me to do the same thing in the match,” she said in an exclusive interview at Wimbledon. “I have more confidence than last year. But I still need more confidence.” 

“I’m still trying to figure out how to deal with pressure,” she said. “I want to play better tennis. When I play not that good, I have to forgive myself. The pressure is only from inside yourself.”
