Joyful Jelena wins French Open
The joy spread on her face the moment after she hit a return winner down the line to seal the match.
Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia says she felt destined to win.
She was born on the day Gustavo Kuerten won the French Open. When she was a kid, her mother/coach took her to Roland Garros.
She turned 20 on the same day as her semi-final opponent Timea Bacsinszky, and the Paris crowd sang happy birthday to her after her victory.
She was losing to heavy favorite Simona Halep when she says she decided to enjoy her time in the French Open final. And she did enjoy it.
Swinging freely with nothing to lose, she overpowered Halep with liners from both sides.
She was rewarded for her courage and positivity.
For Jelena, it’s a dream come true.
